"to be a fool..."

ah,
to be a fool today

to do something that
the well-reasoned mind
eschews,
dismisses,
rejects...

to walk away from
the siphering,
calculating,
summed-up
convictions of those who
add up
two
plus
two
and always get
four...
while
you
hear symphonies in chalkdust,
smell lavender behind every
small symbol,
and only see a sum of
blue...

do something wildly
extravagant for love...
something that
flies in the face
of what is
safe
and cast yourself off the
edge of certainy,
into the
abyss....
glide in
the air of "not knowing"
riding the thermals
of reckless abandon,
immoderate kindness,
towards a destination beyond
all your imagining...

or never
to land at all.

give yourself permission
to sing full-voice in
the subway,
to belly-dance in church,
to write poetry when
the bills need to be paid and the
laundry sits wrinkling in
the dryer...

to hold hands with your
husband,
and kiss your mother, and
cry in front of a
friend.

be foolish in your loving,
be lavish in your living...

rise against the winds of
what-must-be-done, and fly in the
face of should-haves...

be wild-eyed with a grace
that amazes,
un-coiffed with a passion for
your art,
be enflamed with a stunning
courage...

to
be the
painter,
healer,
poet,
singer,
philospoher,
sculptor...

that you
have
always wanted to
be...

if just for today

be a fool,
be a simpleton,
be a wizard, a prophet,
a storyteller,
be
you...

for
Love.

  1. Beautiful! I love you foolishly and I have always felt that perfect love in return. You are a blessing, as is the poem! xo
